at the beginning of his great tome
catholicism henri de lubac sj
invites the reader into the mental world of the
generation just after the apostles
that of clement of A athanasius
basil gregory gregory nazianzens
hilary and cyril d jerusalem not to mention augustine a little later on
the precise insight sustained through 500 yrs of church teaching and revived in a vital way today
what is this insight
for gods' sake
god created human kind with the inherent understading of unity
that our awareness of our likeness to everyother human
is the context for our understanding our likeness to god
something militates against this inherent knowledge
what
when we find out
perhaps we could begin to build something
that looks like a community
the plaster that holds community together
is often cracked and crumbling
patch work is no mean craft
amen
i've noticed that the theme of unity
ReplyDeleteis prevalent in the gospel readings
at this time of year
from John 17
buddhists seem to claim
that our apparent separateness
is an illusion
i don't even know what they mean by that
skrewwed again
ReplyDeletediscombobulation
and community
a devastation at work
trying on thsi pentecost to say soem words that sound uniting
ReplyDeletei read further in de lubac and discern his emphasis of the understanding amongst the first disciples adn the next few generations what kept them attuned to the effort to convey christ to the world it was the pentecost experience of unity that they were seen adn understood by themselves as being united to a same powerful cause
what gets in the way
today
ethnicity
cultural preoccupation with individuality and independence
counter claims of economic importance
misundrstanding of shared tradition
bad talkers
vehement reactors
same old shit different day
lady humility would expect that
it wont be our efforts but those of
some strange god and his angels
working to heal and educate
and tell jokes after dinner
guitar music will unite the world
jh
i think that's most of what i wanted to say
before getting nearly tossed out
of my own blog
having missed church this morning
ReplyDeletei had forgotten today is pentecost
thanks for the reminder
maybe i should read this de lubac
his work sounds interesting
my mind has been drawn these past
few days to the ancient hymn
of christ's humility
... being found in human form
he humbled himself
i think a blog post may be fermenting
&
the pentecost theme
ReplyDeleteall throughout the early writers on christian topics is
prevalent and tends to be restorative the effort made by the holy spirit to ]
redeem to heal to put salve on
all the wounds of all humanity and to speak in every tongue now
that's sort of fascinating or
at least it should be
poetry is
primarily sacred words
and
words that register commonly
in all tngues
the brotherhood of mankind
is a given
wounded of course
but a given
