communitas understood

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communitas

something like this could be useful

humans are the only creatures it would appear
who actually think about living in community

  1. interesting wikipedia article
    though somewhat opaque
i trust i will be enlightened over time

    i'd never heard of liminality
so i followed the link over there as well
very interesting this idea of being in between
    on the threshold
    in transition
of detaching from one definition of self
and being in limbo for a while
    in an undefined state
where a new self can find the space to emerge

i looked up the latin word dies -- day
(or alternatively a verb related to dying?)

i am curious about the title of your blog

community today? community of the day? community days?

    or the death of community?

i can think of times when i experienced
    something like communitas
finite periods of living together as group
two summers spent on the juneau icefield
    geology summer field camp
even this past week at the workshop in miami

i like that sense of being an accepted part
    of a moderate-size group
    taking meals together
    feeling like i would belong
no matter which table i sat down to eat at
even if i don't really know these people
we are a part of a defined group
at least for a period of time

it is very different from normal campus life
where i might go to the dining hall
and debate about whether or not i
know that group of people well enough
to sit down to eat with them
or whether i would be intruding

  2. thanks for responding sally

i use the title to mean
    community day
using 'day' in the noun form

so every day at communitas dies is community day

real definition of what it means to be in communitas is understood i guess only in the doing - to try to arrive at a generalized definition does something to add to recognition of what communities are about and it is useful

it was a rather spontaneous decision
    not much thought

but i've been thinking about writing about this for awhile and now i think i'm going to be spending some time trying to spell out what i mean here

your inspiration your questions your criticism is always welcome

in the monastery there are CLiQue tables
and i tend to avoid those
sometimes i sit there just to see if
the conversation is somehow stultified by a stranger

even momentary community consciousness requires a risk now and then

  3. i suspect that if geology field camp
or the miami workshop lasted long enough
    clique tables would develop
i think the experiences i liked and remember
have to do with that early stage
    of being thrown together
    and nobody knows anyone else
and so there is a certain
    openness and equality
    before the cliques form

    did benedict address cliques?
surely it is a natural human tendency
that was present in his day as well
