On the pilgrim forum I came across the following verse Sir Walter Raleigh wrote in the 16th century regarding his Pilgrimage:
"GIVE me my scallop-shell of quiet,
My staff of faith to walk upon,
My scrip of joy, immortal diet,
My bottle of salvation,
My gown of glory, hope's true gauge;
And thus I'll take my pilgrimage...."
he makes it sound pretty hopeful
ReplyDeletealmost as if the pilgrimage is really unnecessary
if one truly believes
it is one more act of faith however
and we need those
lord knows
4 miles of walking today
ReplyDeleteup in the santa catalinas
a little cooler today
than our past hikes
just a little cooler
but every degree dropped helps
i weighed by pack after we returned
24 pounds including the 0.5 L of water
that was left in my platypus pouch
I started with 2.5 L, so I suppose
the initial weight was 29 pounds
the pack felt fine though
my shoulders did not get nearly
as tired as on our previous hike
so maybe they are building up
some strength
there are still some odds and ends
that i will probably take
that are not in the pack yet
hopefully they won't add
too much more weight
the empty pack itself
weighs 5 pounds
and my sleeping bag
another 5 pounds
i do have a smaller pack
that weighs only 2 pounds
i might see if i can fit
everything into it
ok
ReplyDeletethat last comment was from
... guess who?
i have a litle one man tent
ReplyDeletei'm still mulling over what i'll do for a sleeping bag
i honestly think i could sleep in my clothes with insulated underwear and be OK
but i may take a smaller stuffsack
and thereby arrange my bag neatly on my pack
my pack is first rate
nice pockets and plenty of space though small and snug on my back
perhaps i'll drag along a complete concordance to scripture which weighs about 8 lbs as a way of doing some penance for 20th century intellectual rigour and pretention ....and then who knows it may prove useful as tinder for a fire
:-)
onward
jh
my you do have
ReplyDeletean ability to make me laugh
you could always carry
my breathing machine for me
if you really want some extra weight
then again i really would like to see
the look on the other pilgrims' faces
when you pull out your 8 lb concordance
i'd be happy to carry your
ReplyDeletebreath machine
GIVE me my scallop-shell of quiet
ReplyDeleteI was once told that Coquille St. Jacques (a delightfully rich dish consisting of scallops, cheese, and cream) was invented as a penitential dish at St. Michel. May I have some more penitence, please?
mmm ... that sounds yummy
ReplyDeleteand thanks jh
for the offer
i can probably handle carrying the breatholyzer
(as my dad and i like to call it)
now that i have my new lighter-weight pack
but if you are ever in need
of more penance than Coquille St. Jacques can offer
i'd be happy to oblige you with one 4.2 pound
CPAP machine
great to hear from you, Stu
i hope we find at least one restaurant that serves french food even though we're in spain
ReplyDeletethe rain in spain falls mainly on the plain
i go out walkin'....
that probably won't be our theme song
:)
itchy feet
one of the posters on the pilgrim forum
ReplyDeletehas as her tag line
"the rain in spain falls mostly in Galicia"
which is where we will be walking
the average rainfall map for october
that i posted seems to confirm this
i'd like some french food too
